This year, we want you to be the first into the lake so we are adding a beach splash to the celebration.

PARK FOUNDATION NAMES NEW OFFICERS, SETS GOALS FOR 2017

By | News | No Comments

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (April 1, 2017 – Wilmette, IL)OF-logo George Rafeedie has been selected as the new Board President for the Ouilmette Foundation for the Parks, an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to enriching parks and community life in Wilmette. In addition, the Foundation has determined that funds raised in 2017 will be used to help renovate the Keay Nature Center, a handicapped accessible nature trail and wildlife oasis located at Hibbard Road and Skokie Blvd.

Joining Rafeedie on the foundation’s Executive Board are Holly Gilson, Vice-President; Shelagh Donoghue, Secretary; and Cathy Pratt, treasurer.

Rafeedie replaces Tom Nathan, who served as Board President since 2014. Nathan will remain on the board as a liaison for major gifts. Other members of the Foundation’s board include Phil Andrews, Sue Averill, Karen Glennemeier, David Kritzler, Seth Martin and Jeff Marshall. Amy Wolf and Steve Wilson serve as liaisons from the Board of Park Commissioners and Wilmette Park District staff respectively.

The Foundation Board has set its fundraising goal for 2017 at $50,000. The amount of funds designated for Keay Nature Center has not yet been determined. The Foundation will also continue to make donations to the Wilmette Park District’s Family Scholarship Fund.

During 2017, the Foundation will be sponsoring and/or participating in the following events.

  • Go Green Wilmette (March 12)
  • Beach Dash & Plunge (April 29)
  • Farmer’s Market starting in May
  • A new “Nine, Wine & Dine” Golf Outing (June 23)
  • Plus other events TBD

To date the Foundation has donated over $40,000 to the Wilmette Park District Family Scholarship Fund, which provides financial assistance to Wilmette children who might otherwise be unable to participate in Park District programs.

In 2016 the Foundation raised nearly $60,000 in private donations to match a grant the Park District received from the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to create a habitat for migratory birds in Gillson Park. In September 2016 the Foundation helped coordinate an estimated 364 volunteers from 20 community groups who spent a collective 1,038 hours planting the new bird habitat along Michigan Avenue between Washington and Lake. Nearly 20,000 plants that will benefit birds, butterflies, and people for many generations to come were placed in the ground.

The Ouilmette Foundation was incorporated in 1983 to raise funds for a complete rehabilitation and restoration of the historic Wallace Bowl, which was originally dedicated in 1946 as the Wilmette Outdoor Amphitheatre. The Foundation was revived in 2014 to fill the need for an independent group of residents to complement the Wilmette Park District’s work.

Help Us Make Our Lakefront Beautiful!

By | News | No Comments

The Wilmette Park District is partnering with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to create habitat for migrating birds at Gillson Park. We’ll be adding flowering trees and shrubs, wildflowers, and native grasses within many new garden beds.

ouilmette-foundation-gallery20

The habitat will be the only one of its kind along the Wilmette lakefront – a much-needed refuge for tired birds, but also a beautiful space for us to enjoy, whether through watching birds and butterflies, looking at wildflowers, or simply taking a quiet walk through the park.

The entire Wilmette Community is invited to help this project come to life!

We have thousands of plants to get into the ground, and many hands make short work. Come get your hands dirty, and help create something wonderful.

There will be four shifts: choose the one that fits your schedule.

Saturday, September 24th or Sunday, September 25th

Morning shift from 9:00 to 12:00

Afternoon shift from 1:00 to 4:00

Visit our Sign Up Genius page to reserve a spot!

You can also donate to this great cause using our GoFundMe page. We are looking to match the $60,000 granted to the Wilmette Park District by the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
