Nine, Wine, Dine 2017About Keay Nature Center

Proceeds from this event will be partly used to help the Wilmette Park District with plans to revitalize Keay Nature Center. Keay Nature Center, which was named for the late director of the Northern Suburban Special Recreation Association (NSSRA) Stephen R. Keay, is a hidden gem in Wilmette on the corner of Skokie Blvd and Hibbard Road.

Initially purchased by the park district in 1974, the 4.8-acre park includes a nature center to accommodate the special needs of the disabled, well ahead of its time. The nature center features walking paths and nature trails, a shallow pond, footbridge and a man-made waterfall. The park also offers a wide variety of trees, wildflowers and native Illinois grasses which were carefully chosen and planted, bicycle racks, bird feeders, viewing areas and photo blinds. In raising funds, the Ouilmette Foundation’s goal is to raise awareness around this community gem. In addition, the goal is to help revitalize the park by enhancing learning aspects to supplement nature programming already offered, as well as provide a place to go and learn on self-led walks.

Scholarship Fund

Other proceeds of the event will go toward the Wilmette Park District Scholarship Fund, used by 80 families on average every year in times of need.

Thornwood Park Concert

By | Events | No Comments

In September the Ouilmette Foundation co-sponsored a Concert in the Park night at Thornwood Park which drew more than 300 neighbors for an evening of music, food and fun. The Ouilmette Foundation plans to sponsor additional concerts in appropriate neighborhood parks during 2015 as part of its mission to enrich and enhance community life.

Looking Ahead

In addition to these two inaugural events, the Ouilmette Foundation is now turning its attention to proposed projects which include the renovation of the Keay Nature Center on Hibbard Road and the creation of an environmental education program that would combine the strengths and resident expertise of our park district, school districts and village resources. That long-term project could provide our children with opportunities that include evaluating water treatment facilities and related studies pertaining to land and air pollution.
